Update GTS43 sailing blog:
Phuket Kings Cup Regatta 2011 the final day

Final Day - Pressure is in and the forecast has it building at lunch time so we presume two good races will be run. Race 9 is set as a windward leeward with approx 16-18 knots which we like as we know the GTS43 steams upwind in pressure.

Our start was not out best so we tacked of to port and held clear air out to the right hand side of the course, pressure seemed to click right a little so we were happy. As we neared the top we were back in great shape just astern of the Ker 40 with a nice gap back to the two GP 42’s. Pressure increased a little on the run and we sailed consistent to hold the same gap with the leader and maybe extend a little on the pack behind.

Second beat was also good and another run to the finish to see us finish 2nd by 12 seconds to the Ker 40 and just ahead of the team from Japan. Great start to the day.

Race 10 and we are scheduled for a island race of 27nm which will be hard fought. Pressure is up and down 16-20knots. Short beat to top mark then a 2 nm fetch before a 15nm beat so we know how important the beat is.

Whoop pushed a little hard at the start and got recalled (not so good).  All week we have been positive about recovery and the plan went into action. Dipped back and headed to the right. Back in touch at the top just and we manage to get a clear land and tack over to fetch to the next gate.

Managed to be just behind GP42 and then start the beat. Higher and faster were the calls so we held on for a while before tacking back to the shore to hide from the current and stay with the pack. By the top of the beat we had extended our lead on the fleet and had the Ker 40 and GP 42 following so very happy.

Around the top and heading to the first gate at 145 twa and doing 12-14knots all feeling good. Expecting the lighter higher rating boats to catch us on the run we sailed our own angles and were surprised to finish second across the line to the Ker 40 by only a minute. We weren’t sure on the times of the lower rating 40’s so we hung around at the finish and slowly ticker them of one by one. Its confirmed GTS 43 Walawala 2 1st on IRC in race 10.

Great regatta 2nd overall to Karasu and we closed points on them all the way to the final race so very pleased. Well now we have the facts and the proof in on the scoreboard, love this boat she is quick .

Cheers from a slightly hazy Phuket.
